‘What’s going on?’ Alfie’s head swivelled towards the door and then back to Janey. ‘Since when has your dad had an actual real-life brother? And where’s he gone? Why’s he locked us in? What is up with that dude? He’s got an attitude. Oh no, I rhymed. But anyway. What’s his problem? I thought he needed your help.’

‘I don’t know,’ said Janey. Every question Alfie was voicing was rattling around in her brain too. One thing was for certain – being able to see only someone’s head was very distracting, making it even more difficult for her to think properly. ‘We’ve got to get out of these Invisibubbles.’

Alfie waggled his balloon-like head. ‘No way. I’m thinking we should put our balaclavas back on. We’ve got to get out of here somehow, and these are our best disguise.’

‘We’ll keep them with us, OK? But if I need your help I’d rather be able to see you.’

‘Fair enough.’

Either side of the flower pots, they took off their Invisibubbles. Feeling much more normal in her everyday silver SPIsuit, Janey rattled the door handle. ‘Completely locked.’ Next she foraged under the tarpaulin behind the flower pots. ‘This should be the tunnel entrance. Takes us right through to Everdene. Just . . .’

She lifted up the tarpaulin completely and gawped. ‘It’s gone! Someone’s filled it in.’ The tunnel through which she had reached the school on her last visit had disappeared, the surface rough with new concrete. On closer inspection, there was a special reason it was rough. ‘Alfie, look.’

Drawn in thick strokes about the width of her finger was the now familiar sign:
